Gage Blocks are the basic for all the measurement equipment in the metal workshop.
Carl Edward Johansson is the developer of the first gage block.
Gage blocks are made of steel, carbide or ceramic and the surfaces are polished. They are very precise and will be used for calibrating other measurement equipment.
The Box
In a box there are many different sizes:
- From 1 To 25.00 step 1mm
- 50, 75 and 100 mm
- From 1.01 To 1.09 step 0.01 mm
- From 1.1 To 1.9 step 0.1 mm
With these pieces we can make al the sizes we want to 200mm.
How many do we need for a specific size
Example: we want to have a size of 123.67 mm. We must work from the last digit to the first.
- We have 1 of 1.07 mm => 123.67 – 1.07 = 122.60 mm
- 1 of 1.6 => 122.60 – 1.60 = 121 mm
- 1 of 1.0 => 121 – 1 = 120mm
- 1 of 20 => 120 – 20 = 100mm
- 1 of 100 => 100 – 100 = 0
So, what we need is 5 blocks for 123.67 mm.
puffing-up coefficient
When you use steel blocks, please don’t hold them directly in your hands, but use a rag The reason is the puffing-up coefficient :
Steel : 0.0115 mm/m °C Carbide: 0.005 mm/m °C Ceramic: 0.01 mm/m °C

Good: Cheap Bad: Magnetic ,Corrosion
Gage blocks made of Carbide
Good: almost no corrosion , Low Magnetic, Low puffing-up coefficient Bad: Expensive
Gage Blocks made of Ceramic
Good: No corrosion, Not Magnetic, Low puffing-up coefficient Bad: Very Expensive
Can Ceramic blocks break?
A lot of people think that the small pieces ( 1mm ) easy can break, but with normal use it won’t.
Maybe when u uses a hammer they will break. . Please don’t try this. They are very expensive.
How to use:
1) clean the surfaces of the two blocks.
2) Put them together like this.
